Dr. Shahnawaz (Shan) Muhammed is Associate Professor of Operations Management and MIS at the College of Business Administration, American University of The Middle East (AUM), Kuwait. Before joining AUM, he served as Assistant Professor of Operations Management and MIS at the School of Business and Economics, Fayetteville State University (FSU) in Fayetteville, North Carolina, USA from 2005 to 2009. At AUM, Dr. Muhammed has held several senior level administrative positions over the years including Director of MBA and Executive Education. He was also Head of Academic Operations reporting to the Provost and was responsible for ensuring smooth operation of academic processes of the university, development of policies, and accreditation related activities.
Dr. Muhammed earned his Ph.D. in Manufacturing Management from the College of Business Administration, The University of Toledo (UT), Toledo, Ohio in 2006 and his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from Government College of Engineering Kannur (University of Calicut) in India. He has wide industry experience in engineering consulting for petroleum industry, and in software design, development and testing and has worked in Saudi Arabia, India and USA for almost five years prior to joining the doctoral program at Toledo.
Dr. Muhammed’s research interests are in the areas of Knowledge Management, Information Systems for Knowledge Management, and in Supply Chain Management. His Ph. D. dissertation titled "Antecedents and Impacts of Knowledge Management Practices Supported by Information Technology: An Empirical Study in Manufacturing Context" investigated the nature of knowledge among knowledge workers in industrial settings, and the contributing factors for its enhancement and organizational use. He has several journal articles and conference proceedings and has participated and presented in many international conferences. He has also served as reviewer for several journals and conferences such as DSI and HICSS. He is APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) and is a member of ASCM, ASQ, ISM and Beta Gamma Sigma.
Dr. Muhammed has taught various courses in Operations Management and MIS at AUM, FSU and UT such as Operations Management, Quantitative Methods in Business, Statistics for Business Applications, Project Management, Supply Chain Management and Logistics, Information Systems Theory and Practice, Computer Applications in Business, Database Management Systems, and Artificial Intelligence and Expert Systems. He has taught both at graduate and undergraduate level and has experience with traditional, blended and online instruction. He has developed several new courses over the years and is experienced in curriculum review, assurance of learning, and development of new programs.
At a personal level he is fascinated by the human potential to alter the world we live in, and the human thought process in general. At the academic level this fascination has translated into understanding how organizations create greater value by integrating individual knowledge, and the potential of information technology for enabling such value creation. His research interests seem to draw him towards a field enriched by cognitive science, psychology, sociology, linguistics, neurosciences, information systems, AI, philosophy and management science.
Dr. Muhammed loves outdoors and is a paragliding enthusiast and holds APPI pilot license (License no. 18939) since 2018.
